Commitment to Care

By Joseph Shen, Sr. Director, Applications Development, EmblemHealth

I am never more proud of working at EmblemHealth than when we honor the unsung heroes of New York’s communities — the nonprofit organizations that are truly making a difference in the lives of people who need them the most.

One of the most meaningful programs that EmblemHealth hosts in our communities is the Commitment to Care Lecture and Award Series. EmblemHealth started Commitment to Care in 2013 to recognize the nonprofits that share our 75-year commitment to putting care first for the communities we serve.

Last night, we held our eighth presentation at Flushing Town Hall to shine a spotlight on three outstanding organizations that collaborate with EmblemHealth and that represent a cross section of the many unique neighborhoods of Flushing and Brooklyn:

  • Chinese American Planning Council – Nan Shan Senior Center
  • Flushing Chinese Business Association (FCBA), Inc.
  • Academy of Medical & Public Health Services

Between them, these organizations work to make their communities stronger and healthier by addressing issues and providing services that are instrumental to local residents including education, activism, health care, housing, history, art and culture.

The first Commitment to Care award presentation honored seven Harlem-based nonprofit organizations that provide exceptional care, services and support to the residents of New York City. The program has grown to over a half dozen presentations honoring nonprofits in Manhattan as well as Queens and Brooklyn.

As EmblemHealth has become more and more part of the fabric of the communities we serve, we’ve increased our presence in our neighborhoods through our Neighborhood Care locations and our affiliation with AdvantageCare Physicians, the city’s largest physician led multispecialty medical practice. Our Commitment to Care program is our way of saying “thank you” to the amazing organizations that work tirelessly in our communities to improve the lives and well-being of the people of New York, every single day.
